A first-session checklist for lyophilized vials
A short checklist for the first time a new lot is opened, covering the record, the storage conditions and the notes you should write down.

The first session with a new lot sets the pattern for everything that follows. The steps below are general laboratory practice. Always follow the storage and handling guidance issued for your specific batch, because it takes precedence over any general advice.
Before you open the vial
- Read the lot record and check the lot number against the label
- Confirm the storage conditions listed for this batch
- Let a sealed vial come to the temperature stated in the guidance before opening, to limit condensation
- Prepare a notebook entry with the date, the lot number and the operator
While you work
Keep the time the vial spends open as short as practical, and reseal it promptly. Note the weighing or measuring conditions you used, because those details are what makes a later comparison meaningful.
After the session
Record what remains in the vial, the storage place and the date. If anything in the lot record did not match what you observed, write it down with the time and the step where it happened, and send that note to the supplier with your enquiry.
